School Funding
By Glen Thompson

In response to Mr. Ortiz letter: Last year I asked the school board to request additional funding to the cap and they said that they were satisfied. This year, the state put in place funding that allowed us to fund within 300,000 of EVERY item on the school board's program based budget (well above the current year's funding) with only a small increase in property taxes.

I have stated for the record that I support full funding for schools within our communities ability. Raising property taxes by a million dollars when the school board had no clear purpose identified for the funds seems irresponsible.

The schools have increased local/state funding by over 40% over the past four years.

My question for Mr. Ortiz, let's take this logic to the extreme situation: if the cap were set at $30 million, would you expect us to set the mil rate at the statutory maximum of 30 mils?
