Ketchikan, Alaska - United States Coast Guard units from Southeast Alaska and San Francisco participated in a three-day vertical insertion exercise in Sitka recently to maintain proficiency at vertical insertion from helicopters as well as qualifying aircrews and boarding team personnel. 

Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, Coast Guard Marine Safety and Security Team (MSST) unit 91111 based in Anchorage, MSST unit 91105 from San Francisco and the Coast Guard cutter Naushon home ported in Ketchikan,  joined forces and participated in a three-day deployment exercise in Sitka.

The exercise focused on maintaining proficiency at vertical insertion from helicopters as well as qualifying aircrews and boarding team personnel.  Vertical insertion is a method of expeditiously delivering trained Coast Guard personnel to a vessel or shore facility.   Aircrews and boarding team members must complete both day and night qualifications to both the ground and a Coast Guard vessel.
