United Fishermen of Alaska, representing 33 Alaska fishing groups, announced Wednesday that Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski is UFA's 2004 "Man of the Year in Alaska Politics." The vote approving the selection of Governor Murkowski was unanimous. UFA selected Governor Murkowski for this award because he has supported the Alaska fishing industry and Alaska fishermen by initiating and/or accomplishing the following:

1. Governor Murkowski prioritized fisheries in his administration by appointing a knowledgeable fisheries advisor and working with his fisheries advisor to remain abreast of fisheries issues.

2. Governor Murkowski, by personal involvement, ensured that knowledgeable and qualified individuals were appointed to key positions in ADF&G, Alaska Board of Fisheries and the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council.

3. Governor Murkowski accumulated and distributed in excess of $50,000,000 to energize the recovery of the Alaska salmon industry.

4. Governor Murkowski initiated efforts to expand world markets for Alaska seafood by personally traveling to Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.

5. Governor Murkowski steadfastly defended Alaska's position opposing salmon farming in State waters and salmon ranching in Federal waters.

6. Governor Murkowski endorsed legislation reorganizing the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and enabled ASMI to focus new marketing initiatives on domestic marketing of frozen and canned Alaska seafood.

7. Governor Murkowski championed inclusion of Alaska fishermen in Department of Agriculture commodity purchase and assistance programs.

8. Governor Murkowski authorized legislation providing funding for qualified Gulf of Alaska communities to purchase halibut and sablefish quota shares.

Frank H. Murkowski was elected Governor on November 5, 2002 and was sworn into office on December 2, 2002, as Alaska's tenth governor.
