Borough Receives FEMA Grants for Fire Departments

Ketchikan, Alaska - Ketchikan Gateway Borough Mayor Michael Salazar announced the U.S. Fire Administration, a branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), recently awarded two grants to the Ketchikan Gateway Borough for a total of $480,000.

The new North Tongass Fire Department will receive $333,643 to provide basic firefighter training and purchase equipment for its personnel. Since the North Tongass Fire Department is starting from scratch, the equipment will include all of the basic items for outfitting individual firefighters such as self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), turnout gear, and boots as well as all of the support equipment for filling, testing and maintaining the air bottles.

The South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department will receive $145,941 to provide training and purchase two rapid intervention team kits, 12 new SCBA's, an installed compressor, a mobile air bottle filing station and testing maintenance equipment.

Mayor Salazar said he and the Borough Assembly are proud of the work done by the two fire departments, the Borough Manager's office and Borough staff in applying for these grants.
