Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski on Tuesday announced that Laraine Derr has been appointed as his director of boards and commissions, effective October 15. Derr recently retired as president and CEO of the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association.

"I am gratified that Laraine has agreed to take on the job of managing the many appointments to the state's boards and commissions," Murkowski said. "It is a demanding position that requires an extensive knowledge of people around the state, an understanding of how certain personalities will react with one another, and the tact to diplomatically tell an applicant he or she will not be appointed this time. Given her long involvement in public affairs, I am confident that Laraine will be excellent as director of our boards and commissions."

Derr, 61, was with ASHNHA since 1997, working as a liaison with federal and state agencies, and on advocacy, legislation, and education projects related to health care. Before that, she was head of the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Alaska-Southeast for two years. She was Commissioner of the Department of Revenue during the last year of the Hickel administration in 1994, after serving as deputy commissioner for several years. Derr served as Director of Business Services for the Juneau School District from 1987-92.
