Response to 'Anything but Dan'

By Dan Bockhorst

Michelle O’Brien’s letter to the editor (“Anything but Dan”) doesn’t hold up to objective scrutiny.  I stand on my record as the longest serving Borough Manager in Ketchikan’s history.  During the nearly 10 years that I was Borough Manager, the areawide property tax rate was reduced by more than 25%, taxes on personal property were eliminated, and the Borough’s General Fund was restored to health.

I was nominated for Borough Assembly by a number of young professionals, business leaders, and local elected officials with well more than a century of service to our community.  I have the support of many current Borough employees.

In terms of her comments about challenging State funding of schools, I’m proud of the work I’ve done on that issue over the past 20 years.   I urge voters to review the letter of September 17 from former State Senator Gary Wilken about my efforts in cutting State education taxes on boroughs (without lowering State funding for local schools).  That tax cut has saved Ketchikan taxpayers $19.5 million to date.  Senator Wilken notes further that the Ketchikan/Fairbanks lawsuit has forestalled efforts by the legislature since 2014 to repeal the tax cut.  Senator Wilken’s letter is posted on my website (DanBockhorst.com).
