Where's the Leadership?

By Bill Walker

Dear Editor:

In the face of budget reductions impacting programs and staffing throughout the University of Alaska system, President Gamble is awarded a $320k retention bonus. University morale was already low before news of this extravagant bonus was announced. How can the staff and faculty not feel betrayed?

Governor Parnell has failed to inform Alaskans, as well as the Board of Regents, that we are in a massive $7 million/day spending deficit that his administration forecasts will continue for at least 10 years. This is the largest deficit in state history. Meanwhile, under his watch we are installing glass elevators and maple bathroom stalls in the rarely used Anchorage LIO increasing the rent by 600% and awarding the UA president a $320k bonus for doing his job.

Where's the leadership?
