Producers Respond to Governor's Request for Increased Production

Alaska Governor Frank H. Murkowski Tuesday released letters from ConocoPhillips, BP and Chevron responding to his request for increased North Slope oil production in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"Every barrel of oil we can produce is a barrel our nation needs," said the governor. "I appreciate the willingness of the producers, in this time of national need, to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to increase production."

ConocoPhillips and BP indicated that they have increased production or will be able to increase production in coming weeks by approximately 10,000 bpd. Much of the increase is a result of accelerated work on previously planned projects. Where state approval is required, state agencies are responding expeditiously to the producers' requests.

The governor also noted cooperation in looking at ways to increase production in the long term.

"Alaska plays a vital role in filling the nation's energy needs," said Murkowski. "The cooperation between state agencies and the producers in doing everything possible to fill that need in the short term is critical."
