Juneau, Alaska - The Board of Fisheries announced Tuesday the formation of the Salmon Industry Restructuring Panel, which will advise the board on policy issues associated with options for restructuring Alaska's commercial salmon industry.

The panel is being formed as the board develops an action plan that will be used in restructuring the salmon industry. In reviewing restructuring proposals, the board hopes to develop a model for fisheries policy considerations and to identify research and analysis needs on the range of policy considerations. The board will consider developing an action plan that identifies criteria, guidelines, and a public process for evaluating concepts.

According to a news release, the formation of the panel will ensure that stakeholder input is included in the development of an action plan, which will be forwarded to the full board for review. The panel will be charged with examining options, identifying research and information needs, and reviewing models on the range of alternatives.

A board subcommittee comprised of Chairman Ed Dersham of Anchor Point, Robert Heyano of Dillingham, and John Jensen of Petersburg, has asked the following individuals to serve on the panel:

  • Steve Brown of Homer;
  • Sam Cotton of Anchorage;
  • Karen Dunmall of Nome;
  • Pete Esquiro of Sitka;
  • Wallace Fields of Kodiak;
  • John Garner of NorQuest Seafoods;

  • Kris Norosz of Petersburg;
  • Bob Thorstenson of Juneau;
