Governor's "Our Alaska" Show to Help Inform Alaskans
Weekly TV Program to Air Statewide on GCI Cable TV, ARCS, UATV

September 26, 2003
Friday - 1:15 am

Juneau - Saying Alaskans can benefit from having more information about the activities and programs of state government, Governor Frank Murkowski announced Thursday the start of a weekly half-hour television program, "Our Alaska."

The program will present news and public information about a different topic each week focussing on the initiatives and activities of the Murkowski Administration, the governor said.

"We are making significant progress in many areas of interest to Alaskans, and we felt it was important to help people all across the state get a clear picture of what we are trying to achieve, and how well we are doing," he said. "Alaskans naturally like to know all sides of an issue before making up their minds, and we're trying to provide a wider perspective and more information on the compelling issues of the day."

Alaskans will have several opportunities to view "Our Alaska." It will air on GCI cable television stations across the state on Fridays at 7 p.m., and will repeat Sundays at 5 p.m. in select communities including Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Homer. It will also reach more than 200 rural communities through the Alaska Rural Communications System (ARCS) on Fridays at 9:30 p.m.

The first program in the series is scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 26. It will deal with Alaska Seniors and the Longevity Bonus, and the new Senior Assistance Program. Other upcoming programs include:

Sept. 26: Alaska Seniors and the Longevity Bonus.
Oct. 3: "60 Minutes" interview with Governor Murkowski on the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline
Oct. 10: No Child Left Behind Act, and Adequate Yearly Progress in Alaska Schools
Oct. 17: Alaska Hire Initiative

Future shows will address such issues as the prospects for Alaska natural gas and oil in the national energy bill, new transportation initiatives to stimulate the state economy and efforts to save state money by streamlining state personnel policies.

The governor plans to provide a personal introduction to each "Our Alaska" program, with Press Secretary John Manly serving as host. The program is to be produced by the governor's communication staff, in cooperation with employees in relevant state departments.

"I am excited at the opportunity to keep Alaskans up to date about how their state government is addressing their priorities and meeting their needs," the governor said. "This should encourage even better dialogue between Alaskans and those of us serving them. I believe it will lead to more informed citizens and, ultimately, better government."
