Mt. Edgecumbe Director Hal Spackman Retires

Longtime Mt. Edgecumbe High School Director Hal Spackman has announced his retirement effective September 18, 2003.

Spackman served as the residential principal of MEHS from 1990 to 1995 and academic principal from 1995 to 1999. He has been director of the school since 1999. MEHS is a state operated boarding school located in Sitka, and has been operated by the Department of Education & Early Development since the mid-1980s. The more than 300 students enrolled in the school live in on-site dormitories similar to those on college campuses.

Commissioner of Education & Early Development Roger Sampson has appointed Edgecumbe's Bill Denkinger Interim Director. Denkinger has held various positions with MEHS including residential and academic principal, math teacher and math department chair.

Previous to MEHS, Denkinger served as a principal for Klawock City Schools and Thompson Falls (Montana) Schools. He was also an elementary teacher in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
