Ketchikan General Hospital (KGH) announces the second recipient
of the Joseph A. Shields Jr. Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship
is set aside for students who are at least two years beyond high
school, and are enrolled in or accepted to a health care program
of study.
Katherine (Katie) Davidson,
a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who has previously worked at
KGH, received the $1000 scholarship to be applied towards books
and tuition. Davidson is studying to be a Registered Nurse, Bachelor
of Science, at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu. She earned
her LPN license through the Weber State University of Ogden,
Utah's collaborative program with UAS Ketchikan Campus in 1999
and subsequently completed her RN pre-requisites at UAS during
the past two years. Davidson has been a Ketchikan resident for
most of her life.
The Joseph A. Shields Jr. Memorial Scholarship has been established
from a donation in memory of KGH physician Joseph A. Shields,
Jr. Doctor Shields was a talented and gifted orthopedic surgeon
who devoted 17 years of his career to Ketchikan and Southeast
Alaska. Interestingly, Katherine Davidson's mother, Anne Caskey
(formerly Anne Davidson) was Dr. Shields' first clinic nurse.
After Shields' death in 1996,
his father, Joseph Shields Sr., made a generous donation in his
name to be used for scholarships.
