(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Alaska Congressman Don Young announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the Ketchikan Gateway Borough $93,000 under the Buses and Bus Facilities Grant Program.

This program makes federal resources available to states and direct recipients to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses and related equipment, in addition to supporting the construction of bus-related facilities.

"Access to public transportation is not unique to large cities in the Lower 48. The truth is that in Alaska's urban areas, children and families rely on buses to get to work, school, and around the community," said Congressman Don Young.

Young said, "The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply impacted transit systems across the country, and Alaska is no different. Buses keep countless Alaskans connected, but this is a particularly difficult time for our transit operators. Reduced ridership has significantly lowered revenues, threatening budgets for bus drivers, maintenance, and other critical infrastructure. This funding from the Department of Transportation is welcome news for those who depend on reliable public transit in Fairbanks and Ketchikan."

Young also announced the Fairbanks North Star Borough was awarded $10,403,343 under the Buses and Bus Facilities Grant Program.

"As we continue fighting this virus and working to get our economy back on track, robust transit systems will be essential to getting Alaskans safely back on the job and providing for their families. In Congress, I will always advocate for the transportation options and resilient infrastructure they deserve," said Young.
