Grant Funding Brings Plan Review Training to Ketchikan

Ketchikan, Alaska - The Ketchikan Fire Department hosted a National Fire Academy and State of Alaska Fire Service Training sponsored "Fire and Life Safety Plan Review" class August 16th through 20th. Funded by the Ketchikan Fire Department's successful 2009 Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) application, this training provides students with the training and knowledge needed to do formal Plan Review and the necessary tools required to ensure fire and life-safety construction practices are followed.

Nineteen students from all over Alaska attended the training. This includes two students from Capital City Fire Rescue (Juneau), one from State Fire Service Training (Juneau), two students from Kodiak, one from Petersburg, and three from Anchorage; of which two are with Anchorage Fire Department and one, a Deputy State Fire Marshal. Locally, also attending were five members of the Ketchikan Fire Department, two from North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department, and three employees of the City of Ketchikan Public Works Inspections and Engineering.

Fire and Life Safety Consultant, Dr. James G. Munger, Ph.D., (MIFireE, CFPS, CFEI) provided instruction for the weeklong training. Dr. Munger has been a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the National Fire Academy since 1984. He regularly provides instructional services for the NFA in the areas of fire protection, building and fire codes (technical and management) and fire investigation. He has also developed numerous courses for the NFA in these areas.

Dr. Munger is recognized as a highly qualified and experienced fire and life safety professional. He is a nationally board certified fire protection specialist and qualified in accident reconstruction, NFPA life-safety code compliance, electrical safety, risk management and fire safety training. He is also a qualified expert witness in both state and federal courts in the areas of fire/arson investigation, fire prevention, fire related human behavior, automatic sprinkler systems, inspection and code enforcement, building and fire codes, OSHA workplace safety, products and materials testing procedures and standards. Additionally, Dr. Munger is an invited instructor at the National Fire Protection Association's National Fire Academy and is accepted by the General Services Administration and the Department of Defense as a Fire Safety Consultant.
