The project will widen the RSA embankment on each side of the existing runway and replace existing cross runway drainage culverts. Construction bids for the project opened in June and the low bidder was Kiewit Pacific Company, of Anchorage, which submitted a bid of $19,775,000. This initial project is scheduled to begin construction in September with development of the project rock quarry and initial construction of the RSA embankment. The culvert replacement activities will require about a four week-long runway closure period during which arriving/departing passengers and air cargo for Petersburg will be routed to the nearby Wrangell airport and then shuttled to/from Petersburg a via bus and ferry link between the two airports. The runway closure is scheduled to begin March 23, 2009 and be completed no later than midnight April 21. The overall Phase I project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31, 2009. Airport users will be informed of the runway closure plan by public service announcements, mailings, and the project website located at http://dot.alaska.gov/petersburg-airport/ . Runway Safety Area Improvements 2/2/2/2 Phase II: The second phase will further expand the RSA. This phase includes the additional embankment construction at the runway's west end and runway paving. Construction of this phase requires additional authorization, and the extent of the RSA development will ultimately depend on the amount of available funds. If necessary, a third phase may also be added to the project to provide additional RSA improvements.
