Running for re-election

Greetings!

I filed Wednesday for re-election to the School Board. While there are parts of campaigning I like, such as going door-to-door and talking to people, I really hate having to "toot my own horn," which I was raised to not do. But here goes.

I've enjoyed my three years on the School Board, and I feel like I've helped move the district in a positive direction. With our new superintendent, Mr. Boyle, settling in and bringing us his ideas for improvement, it's an exciting time to be on the board. I feel that he shares my goal of making Ketchikan the best darn school district in Alaska, and I feel even more strongly than before that the board made the right decision to go in a new direction, and that it will be best for our children.

I'm flattered that my colleagues on the board chose me to be president this year, it's certainly been a challenging year, but I hope that they feel I did a good job as president. While I've fallen somewhat short of my goal of getting the whole board working together and moving forward together, I do feel that this year's board has worked together better than many previous boards. I've been fortunate to be part of a great group of officers this year, the assistance I've received from Russell and Choc has been invaluable.

I feel that I've approached issues in an open-minded manner, talking to many different people, getting all the information I can, and then making a decision based on what's best for our children.

If you'd be willing to help with my campaign, from putting a sign on your lawn or car, to stuffing envelopes and walking neighborhoods with me, to making a financial contribution, my number is 225-2603 and my e-mail is dieben@yahoo.com. I always enjoy hearing opinions, comments, questions, and even complaints as well.

I'd appreciate your vote on October 2, and I hope you'll support candidates for the Borough Assembly who will support funding education to the cap.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
