Don Young's Way or No Way
By Don Hoff Jr.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner wrote, "Young gets his way in highway bill" by Sam Bishop News-Miner Washington Bureau. It astonishes me how arrogant Rep. Don Young is about ramming the boon-doggle bridge to nowhere without the vote of the people in Ketchikan. Now, Rep. Don Young and the local Borough Assembly has named the proposed bridge, The Ralph M. Bartholomew Veterans' Memorial Bridge without any consideration of any participation from the electors in Ketchikan or public vote on a name.

This is too obvious that this is a pay back by Don Young. I like the name, "Desecration Bridge" myself. Let's put it to the vote? Let's all go over to Pennock Island and dig up an Indian grave because that is what will happen if this bridge gets constructed and also break one Federal Law and one State of Alaska Law protecting American Indian graves.

To be honest with the readers, I don't think Mr. Bartholomew's name on a proposed bridge is worthy of that honor. I knew Ralph and argued with him about this bridge 20 years or so ago. What an insult to the community of Ketchikan that you can't make any decisions about the boon-doggle bridge nor can you name the bridge.

This bridge is going to cost you the American Taxpayer $315 million dollars, it's going to cause more desecration of Indian graves on Pennock Island. An additional $60 million or 20% of the cost of the proposed bridge will come from the State of Alaska. It is a lot of money for a bridge to connect Ketchikan to Gravina Island via Pennock Island for a handful of people that actually live on Gravina Island.

In closing, Ketchikan, the State of Alaska or the American taxpayer can not afford Don Young's wasteful spending. President George Bush should veto Ketchikan's bridge project. Tell Don Young no to the proposed bridge in Ketchikan, Alaska.

This is my own meddler's opinion.
