Governor Frank Murkowski today ordered that the Alaska flag be flown at half staff from Monday morning, August 11th, through Friday afternoon, August 15th in honor of Chief Peter John, the 102-year-old traditional chief of the Athabascans, who passed away on Friday.

"I knew Chief Peter John, and had met with him a number of times. He was a great leader of his people, especially through the transitions they have made over the past half century," Murkowski said. "He was revered by Alaskans, and will be missed by those who must now take up the mantle of leadership he leaves for them. Nancy and I extend our sympathies to his family and friends."
