Saturday

(SitNews) - The July 30, 2007, meeting of the State Board of Education & Early Development will be an audioconference originating in the Commissioner's Office conference room at 801 West 10th Street in Juneau.

The meeting was formerly advertised as taking place in person in Juneau.

Additionally, the meeting will no longer contain an executive session to interview applicants for the position of Commissioner.

The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development proposes to repeal the alternate performance standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities and adopt proficiency levels for the new alternate assessment, which is based on evaluating students' ability and performance on academic tasks.

The Alaska Department of Education also proposes to implement a growth model as part of the state's accountability system under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

The department will ask the State Board of Education to open a period of public comment on a proposed regulation that will require districts to provide a remediation program for students who have not passed the Alaska High School Graduation Qualifying Examination after the fall test administration in the students' 11th- grade year.

Oral comments may be submitted at a hearing on July 30, 2007, in the Commissioner's Office conference room. This hearing will be held from 10:40 to 11:00 a.m. and might be extended to accommodate those present before 10:30 a.m. who did not have an opportunity to comment.

Persons also may comment at the oral hearing at the following Legislative Information Offices: Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Mat-Su, Nome, and Sitka.

Persons with a disability who need a special accommodation in order to participate in this process, should contact Eric Fry at 907-465-2851, or eric.fry@alaska.gov, no later than seven days before the accommodation is needed.
