Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan The Friends of the Library would like to invite you to make and decorate stars to sell at the Friends of the Library booth at the Blueberry Arts Festival. Tuesday July 18th from 6-7:30pm in the children's annex. All proceeds to benefit Friends of the Library. For more information call 225-3331.

Summer Family Films featured at the Library every Wednesday in July. July 19th "The Aristocats", and July 26th "Homeward Bound". Join the fun with Family film afternoons.

The Fish Pirate's Daughter, Ketchikan's original musical melodrama plays again this Friday, July 21st at the Ted Ferry Civic Center with an All-You-Can-Eat crab feed starting at 7:30pm. A First City Players production, Fish Pirate's is back for its 40th season. Future performances will take place on July 28th and 29th. For more information call First City Players at 225-4792. Workshops & Classes:

Ceramics Classes available: classes available in 4 and 8 week periods through Big Foot Pottery Studios. Enrollment is open and ongoing. Wheelwork classes and studio time available for all skill levels, ages, and interests. Call Erik at 617-2378 for more information and to register.

Holy Name School Summer Adventures offers one more class this summer. Painting Pandemonium lets students play with paint. Learn how to mix an infinite number of colors with the three primary colors and black and white. Open to those entering Kindergarten through 7th grade. Brian Straw, the Stack Brothers and Chris Corrao in concert Sunday, July 30th at 7pm, at That One Place at the New York Hotel. The kitchen will be closed, but the bar will be open, $5 at the door. This show is open to all ages, a guaranteed good time!

2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Juried Art Show, Friday, August 4th, 5-7pm at the Mainstay Gallery. Local artists working in various media will be showcased as well as local culinary artists with their blueberry dishes out for all to taste. Don't miss this spectacular sweet blue event. 9th Annual Gigglefeet Dance Festival shimmies, shakes, taps and quakes its way onto the Kayhi stage on Friday, August 4th and Sunday, August 6th. Both performances will begin at 7:30pm with local and regional dancers and choreographers showing off their stuff in this local festival event. Sponsored by First City Players, Ketchikan Theatre Ballet and the Arts Council. For tickets and more information call 225-2211.

The 2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Saturday, August 5th from 10am-5pm at the State Building in downtown Ketchikan is an event you don't want to miss. Artist booths, food and game booths, slug races and weigh-ins and the feisty Battle of the Bands competition are just a few of the highlights for this annual hometown event. Ongoing attractions:

Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan, the museum's annual summer display, on now through September 30th at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street.

Point Higgins Library Opens June 13 through August 10. Call the Library at 225-0370 for more information.

Story time at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school age children.

Former Ketchikan Vista Volunteer Amos Hopkins hikes the Appalachian Trail for the arts. On the East Coast, the Appalachian Trail is 2,175 miles long running from Maine to Georgia and takes approximately 6 months to hike. Amos and his girlfriend Katy left on May 19th and expect to finish around the end of October/ early November. They are hiking this trail to raise money for the Raymond Thunder-Sky Scholarship www.visionariesandvoices.com, and for the Bluegrass Music Trail Project, www.uacvoice.org. Calling all writers: interested in getting together to write and talk about your writing with others? Call Elizabeth Flom to get something started or get involved, 247-1313.

Call for Bands: Calling all bands interested in the Battle of the Bands competition and show on August 5th at the Blueberry Arts Festival. Cash prizes available, call the arts council for more information, 225-2211. Please register by July 26th, space is limited.

Call for Dancers and Choreographers to register for the 9th Annual Gigglefeet Festival. July 21st is the deadline to register your piece. Dancers and choreographers of all ages, styles and experience are encouraged to participate in this annual dance extravaganza. Call to artists to submit works for the 2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Juried Art Show. Artists in all media are encouraged to submit up to two pieces in two and/or three dimensions and must be ready to be displayed. More information and exact criteria for submissions is available at the arts council 225-2211, and www.ketchikanarts.org. Download a form from our website and bring it in, or stop on by to fill it out in our office at 716 Totem Way. Deadline for submissions is 5pm, Monday, July 31st.

Auditions for fall musical Oliver! The First City Players will be holding auditions for the fall musical Oliver, running November 3, 4, 10, 11, and 12 at Kayhi. Auditions will be held August 28, 29, and 30. Roles are available for 19 men and boys, 8 women, and large chorus of men, women, and children. Interested actors must call the First City Players to arrange an audition date and time, 225-4792.

Call to artists to submit found and readymade art for Re-Find, an open-call exhibit at The Mainstay Gallery throughout the month of September 2006. Artists 16 years an older working in all media are encouraged to submit a maximum of 2 pieces. The complete call with guidelines is available at www.ketchikanarts.org as well as a registration form. Deadline for submissions is by 5pm, Tuesday, August 29th. Call 225-2211 for more info.

Call to Artists for commissioned pieces for three buildings within the Anchorage Municipality. Project budgets vary with each building and begin at $150,000. Call to artists to submit proposals for solo exhibitions with the Anchorage Museum of History and Art for the years 2007-2010. Open to all resident Alaska artists who have not had a solo exhibition at the Museum within the last four years, and open to work in all media. Deadline for proposals is 5pm on August 18, 2006. Call to artists for Earth, Fire and Fibre XXVI: Alaskan resident artists working in bone/ivory, glass, clay, stone, skin/gut, wood, fibre, metal or plastic are invited to submit slides for this exhibit through the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Slides are due August 31, 2006 to the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. A full prospectus is online at www.anchoragemusuem.org.

ASCA Grant application due dates are ongoing, with many due on a quarterly basis. The next round for career opportunity grants, master artist and apprentice grants, community arts development and workshop grants is due September 1st. All grants applications are available online at www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca.

Inside Passages, Ketchikan's literary magazine, is entering its seventeenth year of publication. Editors are looking for poems (100 lines, maximum), short stories and essays (up to 2500 words), and artwork suitable for grayscale reproduction. Please submit your work in the body of an email message (to info@ketchikanarts.org) or on a CD. Hard copies mailed in will be accepted as well. Publication will be in November. Those selected for publication will receive one copy of Inside Passages. Additional volumes available to participants at a discount. Inside Passages is published annually by the Writers Forum, which is a program of the Arts Council. Requirements: Please include your name, address, phone number, title(s) of your work, and a 4-line biography in submissions. Meetings and Gatherings:

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.

 

Coming attractions:

Xaada Tak'anlang Haida Descendant Dancers: Once a month throughout the summer, the Haida Descendant Dancers will perform at the Totem Bight Clan House in the Totem Bight State Historical Park. The next dance will be Friday, August 11th from 6:30-7:30pm. Admission is free to the public and coffee and cookies may be served. Co-sponsored by Alaska State Parks and Alaska Natural History Association.

Disney's Aladdin, Jr. featuring the theatre and movement students from the ARTSCool camp will show on the Kayhi stage Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12. Aladdin, Jr. is one of Disney's best loved shows, don't miss it. Sponsored by ARTSCool, a collaboration between First City Players and the Ketchikan Theatre Ballet. McDonald's is hosting a Multicultural Fair August 12th in the Plaza from 10am - 8pm. They are looking for artists, performers and chefs to proudly present their dance, song, fashion, art and food at the fair.
