Harry Martin has been Superintendent of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District since 2000. Prior to being appointed Superintendent in Ketchikan, he served in several different educational capacities in the Bering Strait School District in Unalakleet, over a 14year period. He was a principal, special education director, curriculum & instruction director and associate superintendent during the years he worked in the Bering Strait School District.

The Ketchikan School District enrolls 2325 students in Alaska's "First City." There are 10 schools in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, including a correspondence school, a charter school, a regional youth facility, and Tongass School of Arts and Sciences.

Nominators cited Martin's "remarkable leadership ability in working with various, diverse constituencies including the school board, Borough Assembly, teachers, staff, students, parents, and community members." The selection committee further noted his professional involvement at both the state and national level. Martin was most recently elected by his peers to represent Alaska on the Governing Board of the American Association of School Administrators.

Alaskan administrators have nominated Martin for National Superintendent of the Year.
His nomination will be advanced to the American Association of School Administrators for
consideration in February 2006 at the association's annual meeting in San Diego, California.

The selection committee was comprised of representatives from the PTA (Parent Teacher
Association), NEA-Alaska (National Education Association), AAESP and AASSP (Elementary
and Secondary Principals' Associations), AASB (Association of Alaska School Boards), AASG
(Alaska Association of Student Governments), State Chamber of Commerce, and AASA.
