Greenpeace Vessle Arctic Sunrise Arrives In Ketchikan

Ketchikan, Alaska - The Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise arrived for a two-day stop in Ketchikan on Monday beginning a one month tour of Southeast Alaska. During the Arctic Sunrise's Southeast Alaska tour, the Greenpeace Forest Campaign will be calling for a moratorium on commercial logging and road construction in the Tongass National Forest.

Quoting Greenpeace, "This work is part of our national campaign to end large-scale commercial logging and road construction on public lands - land owned by the American taxpayer. Our public lands are the final refuge for much of America's last intact forest areas."

The Arctic Sunrise's one month tour of Southeast Alaska will also include visits to Hydaburg, Craig, Kake, Angoon, Juneau and Sitka.

Listen to this KRBD story... Federal and state agencies have formed a special security task force in preparation for next week's arrival of the Greenpeace Vessel Arctic Sunrise. As they did during last year's visit of the Greenpeace Vessel Esparanza, the U.S. Forest Service, Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers have formed the Southeast Unified command to deal with potential safety or security threats during the Arctic Sunrise's one-month tour of Southeast Alaska. Deanna Garrison has this report.
