(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - The Ketchikan CHARR King Salmon Derby wrapped up the second of three weekends of fishing Sunday evening.  Kevin Hansen, whose 43.2 lb entry took the top spot during week-one fishing maintained his lead atop the derby ladder through the second weekend, in spite of 7 new entrants making their way into the top 10.   Hansen’s king was weighed in at the Clover Pass Resort weigh-in station at noon during the second day of the tournament.  Hansen will have to anxiously await one more weekend of fishing to see if his fish will hold on to claim the derby’s grand prize, over $10,000 in cash.

This is the 65th annual king salmon derby, with an event held each year since 1949 with the exception of 1974.  From 1949 In 1976 (excluding 74) both “derby days” and a seasonal derby were held.  “Derby Days” mimicked the current event, with fishing dates generally coinciding with Memorial Day weekend and subsequent weekends.  The seasonal derby lasted through the entire summer.  Since 1977, only one local derby has been held.

Participation in the event remained down from 2011 by about 100 anglers over the second derby weekend, about the same difference between years that was noted during the first week of fishing.  A total of 727 anglers checked in at one of four weigh-in stations during week two.

New entrants into the top ten include: Mathew Murphy at 38.6 lbs (Knudson Cove); John Dickinson at 36.9 lbs (Clover Pass Resort); Mike Ramsay at 36.3 lbs (Mountain Point Boat Launch); Tyler Jackson at 35.8 lbs (Mountain Point Boat Launch); Michael Wills at 33.7 lbs (Clover Pass Resort); Ron Wilks at 31.9 lbs (Clover Pass Resort); and Matthew Boyd at 30.9 lbs (Mountain Point Boat Launch).

Total numbers of fish turned into the derby remain at about half the number weighed in during the 2011 event.  Week two saw 250 fish hit the dock, compared to 459 in 2011.  Total weight landed during week two was 4,371.

Ava Widmeyer, who lead the youth ladder after week one, was knocked off the top spot by Cassandra Adams who weighed in a 27.6 lb king at Knudson Cove. Widmeyer’s fish holds the second spot on the youth ladder.  New entrants into the top ten on the youth ladder include: Eleanor Pickrell at 15.9 lbs (Clover Pass Resort); Hunter Mathews at 14.4 lbs (Mountain Point Boat Launch); Madison Lundamo at 13.8 lbs (Knudson Cove Marina); and Rylie Welk at 13.3 lbs (Knudson Cove Marina).

All participants are eligible for the $10,000 grand prize.  Individual ticket holders are eligible for prizes on the adult prize ladder, and youths fishing with a valid ticket holder can enter fish on the youth prize ladder.  Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Ketchikan CHARR Educational Fund, which provides scholarship monies to local college students.

The derby will wrap up next weekend, June 9 & 10.  The awards ceremony will be held June 22, at 6:30 PM, at the Ted Ferry Civic Center.  There is no charge for the event and all derby ticket holders are invited to attend.  As in years past, derby ladder holders will choose their prize package in the order that they appear on the derby ladder.

Results will be certified one week following the end of the derby.
