Dear Editor, friends, neighbors, fellow Alaskans,

Below is a letter I emailed to our congressional delegation today, and asking that you call, email, or fax them and voice your opposition to S 1348. It doesn't fix the problems of illegal immigration, and is nothing but an AMNESTY bill in disguise. Here is the information for contact with my letter below:

Thank you,

Dear Senator Murkowski,

Yesterday, I received your letter dated June 7th, thanking me for contacting you regarding my views on comprehensive immigration reform.

This letter goes on to tell me what a good deal this legislation is for America, and how the advocates of this bill, S 1348, have cunningly placed these "triggers", provisions, and Z visa's in this bill to assure we fix the problem, and you think the direction this bill takes is positive!

I think you need to get your information about this bill, from someone other than Senator Kennedy, as the negative impacts <http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/wm1490.cfm> of this bill that have been coming out, far outweigh any positive benefits in my opinion.

Senator Kennedy has pushed SEVEN amnesties into law, none of which reduced illegal immigration, and while enforcement was promised, IT HAS NOT BEEN HONORED BY CONGRESS!

1. In 1986, Ted Kennedy's blanket amnesty for 2.7 million illegal aliens promised a lot more enforcement but did not set any requirements for actual reductions in illegal immigration. The illegal flow continued.
2. In 1994, Ted Kennedy's Section 245(i) Amnesty gave legal residence and jobs to 578,000 illegal aliens. It was a temporary rolling amnesty primarily for extended family members of immigrants who instead of waiting in line, come on to the country illegally. The illegal flow continued.
3. In 1997, Ted Kennedy's extension of the Section 245(i) rolling amnesty was followed by an increasing flow of illegal immigration.
4. In 1997, Ted Kennedy also won an amnesty for close to one million illegal aliens from Central America. Illegal immigration sped up some more.
5. In 1998, Ted Kennedy won an amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti. The illegal flow continued.
6. In 2000, Ted Kennedy got the so-called Late Amnesty, legalizing another 400,000 illegal aliens who claimed that they missed out on Kennedy's 1986 amnesty. Illegal immigration continued unimpeded.
7. In 2000, Ted Kennedy also won the LIFE Act Amnesty for an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens. It was another reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty., an estimated 900,000 illegal aliens. Illegal immigration accelerated.

Now, Ted Kennedy is saying that this amnesty is necessary if we are ever to stop the flow of illegal aliens. Why would any Senator believe him?

1965: "The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs." -- Ted Kennedy(D)

1986: "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this." -- Ted Kennedy(D)

2007: "Now it is time for action. 2007 is the year we must fix our broken system." -- Ted Kennedy(D)

Your letter states the S 1348 will implement border security, by making certain "trigger mechanisms" and provisions MUST be implemented and operative before any action on a temporary work program or adjustment of status for illegal aliens can take place, implying our security problems will be fixed by this bill. Aren't you aware that:

Within 180 days after the President signs the legislation, the Department of Homeland Security must start handing out amnesties, in the form of "probationary" Z visas. (No border security triggers need to be met; the amnesty comes first, according to Sections 1(a) and 601(f)(2) of the bill.) At that point, the terrorist can choose whichever of three options suits him best.

Your, triggers, provisions, and potential amendments are MEANINGLESS! Aren't you aware that Senator Reid (D) plans to use the "clay pigeon" tactic to prevent any meaningful amendments from being approved, and Senator Lott (R) is on record as saying: Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican, said those amendments will simply disappear when the House and Senate go to conference.

This is an AMNESTY bill , plain and simple, no matter how hard the advocates try to spin it, and no amount of name calling or shouting down the opponents will help to conceal that! Polls show the American people are not only on to this fact, but that this bill only has the support of 20%, and 69% of Americans favor an approach that "focuses exclusively on securing the border and reducing illegal immigration".

This is not news to anyone except it seems, Republican Senators , who in their desire to please their "corporate donors" would like to blind themselves from the truth. Please be advised, that any YES vote on any provision that puts the bill on the floor or moves it forward WILL be considered a VOTE FOR AMNESTY, and seriously jeopardize your future.

I am attaching a list of links that will show the dangers of adopting this bill, as well as the views of mainstream America on this matter. Please take some time out and educate yourself on other viewpoints on this matter. It is not only your responsibility, but is extremely important that this issue be resolved in a matter that benefits America, and not just the special interests that helped write this bill!

I also am forwarding this letter to Senator Stevens, Representative Young, and going to post it on many online newspapers in Alaska for your constituents to read.

I again urge you to consider ANY vote you make on this bill carefully.

Sincerely,

Byron Whitesides
