14 Guantanamo Detainees Transferred to Saudi Arabia

June 27, 2006
Tuesday

Washington -- Fourteen detainees have been transferred from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Saudi Arabia, the Department of Defense announced in a June 24th press release.

Thirteen were approved for transfer by an Administrative Review Board, which annually reviews each detainee's case and determines if the detainee should be released, transferred or continue to be detained. One detainee was found no longer to be an enemy combatant by the Combatant Status Review Tribunals.

To date, more than 300 detainees have been transferred from Guantanamo to other nations. Approximately 450 detainees remain at the U.S. detention facility. The United States is working with other nations to arrange the transfer for 120 detainees who have been determined to be eligible for transfer or release.
