Ketchikan, Alaska - This week in Ketchikan singer, songwriter and producer Sara Hickman performs in Ketchikan, June 30th at 7 pm in the Kayhi auditorium. Sara Hickman is an award winning singer/songwriter with a wide range of guitar and vocal music. Her show will be a family friendly show that is sure to please audiences of all ages. Canada Day Ceilidh featuring fiddler Laurie Hart will be a night of folk dancing and secret chef's desserts to raise money for Paddys Leather Breeches' Ireland trip. The festivities will run 7-10:30pm at the Coast Guard Base Crow's Nest on Canada Day, July 1, 2006. Tickets are on sale now at McPherson Music, Silver Basin and the Arts Council. Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing will take you back to a Shakespearean Summer with a festival feel. Bring a picnic and come early to enjoy period games, food, and music before the show. Rain or shine, this production will go on, in case of inclement weather the show will take place inside, warm weather is not guaranteed, but a good time is. The final two shows will be July 1, 2, Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 5pm. The box office will open 11/2 hr. before the start of the performance. Ladies' Song Circle. Come sing Carter Family old-timey songs emphasizing harmony and rounds on Friday, June 30 at the Sugar Hill Dance Hall (16 miles North Tongass) from 6:30-9:00pm. Singers do not need to know how to read music. All are welcome that enjoy singing and can easily catch onto verses. Space is somewhat limited. Please call Sher Schwartz at 617-4387 to sing up.

No Artist is an Island on display now at the Mainstay Gallery. Beth Antonsen and friends features various styles, media and artists. This exhibit will be on display through Friday, June 30. Calling all artists to submit proposals for the Fawn Mountain Percent For Art project. Proposals are due Wednesday, June 28th by 5pm to the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council, 716 Totem Way. Come dress up a truck for the 4th! Volunteers are needed for the Arts Community's 4th of July Float. This year's decoration idea is to carry and display painted umbrellas on a truck full of arts people. Come on down to help spruce up the truck on Saturday, July 1st from 10am - 2pm-ish starting at the Mainstay Gallery at 716 Totem Way. Workshops & Classes:

Mini Camp for budding visual artists! The Arts Council is sponsoring visual art camp for the youngest artists in town. If you are 6 or 7 years old, you are invited to come make masks, paintings, fabric art and more! Camp will be held at Holy Name School and will run July 10-20, Monday thru Thursday in the mornings from 9am-10:30am. ArtsCool Summer Theatre and Dance Camp: First City Players and Ketchikan Theatre Ballet are now accepting registrations through July 14 for this summer's camp. Running July 17- August 11, with camp shows on August 11 and 12. For ages 8-16, including a movement and advanced movement/theatre camp in the mornings and an afternoon theatre camp performing Disney's Aladdin, Jr. Call 225-4792 or 225-9311 or visit www.ketchikanarts.org for more info.

Holy Name School Summer Adventures offers classes in all different areas of fun and creativity this summer. Many different classes taught by Holy Name School teachers will be happening including cooking, arts & crafts, painting, games, math games and more. Call the church office for more information and to register 225-2570. Summer Adventures runs July 10-20 and August 7-17, Monday through Thursday, all day or half day programs are available. Plein Air Workshop in Juneau hosted by the painting group Plein Rein, a group focusing on plein air works in all types of visual media. Visiting artist Larry Seiler will be teaching the second annual summer plein air painting workshop on July 8-12, 2006 and July 14 - 16. Sitka Fine Art Camp 2006 is accepting registrations for this year's camp. Join Middle School and High School students from around Alaska and the lower 48 in an exciting creative experience. Classes range from drawing and painting, to film animation and photography, to hip-hop dance and musical workshops. Middle School sessions are on now: High School sessions from July 2 - July 16. The 22nd Sitka Symposium featuring talks, readings and workshops, is titled Radical Compassion: Across the Great Divides, and runs July 16 -- 22, 2006. Symposium leaders for this year are Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rabia Terri Harris, Micheline Aharonian Marcom, Soto Zen Priest Alan Senauke and Sandy Tolan. Kid's 4th of July Parade. On Tues., July 4th, parents and kids are welcome to meet at the pink Federal building at 10:30am for registration to begin the 11am parade. Children walk from the Federal Building to the Lion's Club booth at Tongass Dock. Come dressed in your patriotic best! Opening Reception for Ketchikan artist Diane Burton, with her show, From Tongass to the Arctic in Oil will transpire Friday, July 7 from 5-7pm at the Mainstay Gallery. The Fish Pirate's Daughter is Ketchikan's original musical melodrama. A First City Players production, Fish Pirate's is back for its 42nd season. Performances will take place on July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th and 29th. For more information call First City Players at 225-4792.

Our Town: The Life and Times of Ketchikan, the museum's annual summer display, on now through September 30th at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street.

Former Ketchikan Vista Volunteer Amos Hopkins hikes the Appalachian Trail for the arts. On the East Coast, the Appalachian Trail is 2,175 miles long running from Maine to Georgia and takes approximately 6 months to hike. Amos and his girlfriend Katy left on May 19th and expect to finish around the end of October/ early November. They are hiking this trail to raise money for the Raymond Thunder-Sky Scholarship www.visionariesandvoice.com, and for the Bluegrass Music Trail Project, www.uacvoice.org. Drop-In Chess for kids at the Library goes from 4-5pm every Wednesday. Drop-in anytime to learn from scratch or fine tune your skills. Call the Library for more info, 225-0370.

Story time at the Library continues regularly throughout the year on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:30am. After some playtime, the librarian reads stories, sings songs, does finger plays and shows a short film beginning around 10:40 am. This program is appropriate for infants through pre-school age children.
Upcoming auditions, contests, artist opportunities, etc:

Call to Artists for commissioned pieces for three buildings within the Anchorage Municipality. Project budgets vary with each building and begin at $150,000. Call to artists to submit works for the 2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Juried Art Show. Artists in all media are encouraged to submit up to two pieces in two and/or three dimensions and must be ready to be displayed. More information and exact criteria for submissions is available at the arts council 225-2211, and www.ketchikanarts.org. Download a form from our website and bring it in, or stop on by to fill it out in our office at 716 Totem Way. Deadline for submissions is 5pm, Monday, July 31st.

Call to artists to submit found and readymade art for Re-Find, an open-call exhibit at The Mainstay Gallery throughout the month of September 2006. Artists 16 years an older working in all media are encouraged to submit a maximum of 2 pieces. The complete call with guidelines is available at www.ketchikanarts.org as well as a registration form. ASCA Grant application due dates are ongoing, with many due on a quarterly basis. The next round for career opportunity grants, master artist and apprentice grants, community arts development and workshop grants is due September 1st. All grants applications are available online at www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca.

Inside Passages, Ketchikan's literary magazine, is entering its seventeenth year of publication. Editors are looking for poems (100 lines, maximum), short stories and essays (up to 2500 words), and artwork suitable for grayscale reproduction. Please submit your work in the body of an email message (to info@ketchikanarts.org) or on a CD. Hard copies mailed in will be accepted as well. Publication will be in November. Those selected for publication will receive one copy of Inside Passages. Additional volumes available to participants at a discount. Inside Passages is published annually by the Writers Forum, which is a program of the Arts Council. Requirements: Please include your name, address, phone number, title(s) of your work, and a 4-line biography in submissions. The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.

The 2006 Blueberry Arts Festival Saturday, August 5th from 10am-5pm at the State Building in downtown Ketchikan is an event you don't want to miss. Artist booths, food and game booths, slug races and weigh-ins and the feisty Battle of the Bands competition are just a few of the highlights for this annual hometown event. Disney's Aladdin, Jr. featuring the theatre and movement students from the ARTSCool camp will show on the Kayhi stage Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12.
