WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

EDITOR, SitNews:

I feel compelled to submit this letter after hearing some disturbing news. It seems that the School Board and the School District Superintendent are about to demote Ketchikan High School Principal Larry Eklund. I have never before dealt with any school administrator like Mr. Eklund. He is willing to listen to new ideas, and shows a true concern for both Students and Parents.

As a Lieutenant in the Ketchikan Fire Department, I have taken an interest in school safety. I have discussed ideas with Mr. Eklund and find it very refreshing to be able to talk to someone who really listens. Mr. Eklund was interested in attending a class at the National Fire Academy that is designed for School Administrators who want to be better prepared for any types of school disasters.

Anyone who has been around the High School knows that the Eklunds have endured a tough several years. Most of us would be hard pressed to carry on at all, let alone at the professional level that Mr. Eklund has managed.

I am the proud father of two beautiful and intelligent young women who have thrived in this School District. Both of my girls have participated in Student government, pep club, sports, extracurricular activities, and are both National Honor Society members. The two of them have only good things to say about their dealings with Mr. Eklund.

Watching Mr. Eklund running across the gym floor, leading the student body in a wave is what it's all about.

This Community will be hard pressed to find someone who can fill the role that Mr. Eklund has so elegantly found success in. This Community must be willing to stand up and support one another and work elbow to elbow in the pursuit of a great education for our children. I support Mr. Eklund as an integral part of our Community, a contributor to a better Ketchikan, a hard working Administrator, and a heck of a nice guy!
