Ketchikan, Alaska - A hunters' safety course sponsored by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) was recently held at the Ketchikan Rod & Gun Club. Boyd Porter and Mike Younker of ADFG presented the class for approximately a dozen hunters, both young and old.

The two day class began with four hours of indoor course review work. Porter and Younker covered subjects ranging from firearm safety to wildlife conservation, first aid and survival skills. 
 
Ketchikan resident Ed Toribio of Primo Expeditions said, "On Tuesday evening we all enjoyed the beautiful weather for the field work." He said Porter led the students through the field, where they spotted various cardboard silhouette animals in the brush. "While carrying unloaded weapons, the future hunters identified the animals, estimated the range and determined if the animal presented a safe shot from their position," said Toribio. The students then moved to the rifle range to practice shooting .22 caliber rifles and shoot a qualifying round to earn their "Hunter's Safety Certificate", he said.

Toribio said, "Everyone enjoyed the course and will remember the lessons they learned throughout their hunting and outdoor lives. It was even a good refresher course for the old seasoned veterans."

The Ketchikan Rod & Gun Club is located approximately 11-miles north of Ketchikan.
