My name is Colleen Scanlon and I am enrolled full time at the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan. This summer I am taking a class entitled "Community and Economic Development". On Friday, June 17, 2005, SitNews posted a press release regarding the class. In cooperation with the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce we are conducting an economic assessment of our local economy. Those of us in the Community Economic Development summer course are exploring how community economic development happens, various strategies to assess the current state of an economy and how to apply strategies for change.

As a student in this class as well as a long time resident who is concerned with the economic viability of Ketchikan, I am urging all businesses in Ketchikan to participate in this very important project.

The assessment takes 20 minutes to fill out in an online web-based format. One benefit of being a participating business is you will have access to the results beginning September 1st, 2005.

Results will then be made available to the entire community in early 2006.

The purpose of the assessments is to gather information from area businesses which ultimately will help strengthen local business strategy, develop economic sustainability plans for the community and gain a broader perspective on trends and area needs.

Business owners, managers, financial managers and strategic planners or anyone who has these responsibilities within a business would be ideal candidate to fill out the assessment. We are seeking to assess a wide variety of business industries, from cottage or in-home business, seasonal employers to larger employers within the community.

The goal we are trying to achieve will be of benefit to both us as students as well as the business community at large.

If your business is willing to participate, email your first and last name, business name, and email address to ketch.info@uas.alaska.edu. Upon receipt and verification you will be sent a login name and password link to the assessment.

Thank you very much in advance for your time, and participation in this very important project.
