Retort: Pork Barrel?

Jay Jones, the construction of new road on Annette Island is not relevant nor be compared to the cost of a proposed bridge to no-where. I have to say in Metlakatla defense, it is in Ketchikan s best interest for Annette Island road project succeed. This road to Ketchikan will generate future income and patronage to Ketchikan businesses.

Annette Island is a reservation for the Tsimshian Nation. Metlakatla is a sovereign country like France, Italy and England. The Tsimshian s have a government to government relationship with the U.S. Federal Government. That deal was with the sovereign government of Metlakatla, the U.S. Government and negotiates with the State of Alaska. No I don t feel that is pork barrel spending nor special interest expenditure on the Annette Island road project. I wouldn't make Metlakatla angry; they might change their minds about coming to Ketchikan.

Another point, even Ketchikan Indian Community (I.R.A. Council government) is a recognized by the Federal Government. Even though, they don t enjoy a large land base. Negotiate at a government to government level as well as the village of Saxman, Alaska. The federal dollars that these Native Governments get, benefits not only Alaska Natives but also the residents of Ketchikan too.
