Trade Adjustment Assistance workshops winding down

June 22, 2004
Tuesday

Anchorage, Alaska - Nearly 400 Alaska commercial salmon fishermen who signed up for federal benefits under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Trade Adjustment Assistance Program (TAA) have not yet attended a mandatory technical assistance workshop. They have until June 30, 2004 to attend a workshop and remain eligible for benefits under the program, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Marine Advisory Program.

The TAA program offers eligible Alaska salmon fishermen hit hard by low salmon prices financial compensation, job training and educational benefits.

Salmon fishermen applying for benefits under the TAA program are required to take part in a free one-hour technical assistance workshop conducted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Marine Advisory Program with cooperation from the Cooperative Extension Service.

Since mid-January when the program was launched, the UAF Marine Advisory Program has conducted 225 technical assistance workshops in 68 communities across the state to nearly 4,000 of the 4,400 Alaska resident salmon fishermen who've applied for TAA benefits.

Audio conferences for the remaining fishermen are available throughout June. To make arrangements in Ketchikan or other areas, contact the Marine Advisory Program at 1-888-788-6333 or a Marine Advisory agent in your area. In Anchorage, call 786-6328.
