Ketchikan Community Foundation distributes first grant funding

(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - A little over $11,000 was distributed among four Ketchikan non-profit organizations Friday May 6th by the Ketchikan Community Foundation – the first grant awards made by the Foundation, marking an historic milestone.

Since forming in 2013 the Foundation’s endowment fund has grown to about $260,000 and reached the point where it could afford to disperse funds, according to Tom Schulz, the Foundation’s grant committee chairman.

Groups receiving the first funding include:

  • Special Olympics Alaska, Ketchikan Community program -- $2,500, to fund travel and training for participants.
  • Ketchikan Theatre Ballet -- $2,500, to support participation in the ballet program by economically challenged youth who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate.
  • Ketchikan Volunteer Hospice -- $5,000 to provide bereavement training for Hospice volunteers.
  • Ketchikan Arts and Humanities Council -- $1,264 to help fund travel to the Basic Arts Institute in Juneau for 10 Ketchikan area teachers.

To help make it a public event, the awards presentation was done Friday evening at the Tongass Historical Museum as part of the Celebration of the Sea festivities.
