After attending the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Whipple chose to complete his residency training through the Cascades East Rural Family Medicine Residency Program of Oregon Health and Science University. The program is a three year, community-based program that strives to prepare providers to become models of excellence in rural health care delivery.

After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Whipple spent several years providing care to Emergency and Urgent Care patients in eastern Oregon and Sacramento. Because of his passion for caring for patients in rural areas, Dr. Whipple ultimately chose to return to family practice in Ketchikan.

“Serving in a community like Ketchikan will allow me to help patients with a wide variety of concerns and remain involved in the care of each patient throughout the process,” said Dr. Whipple. “I find this ongoing connection to my patients very interesting and fulfilling.”

The opportunity to practice medicine in Alaska was appealing to Dr. Whipple having spent some time in Alaska a number of years ago. In fact, his first Alaskan adventure started with a flight into Anchorage; a hitched ride to Homer Spit where he worked a few weeks on the slime line; a road trip by food truck to the Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival; and, finally, a shared ride through Alaska and Canada to his car in Seattle.

Dr. Whipple, who was born in Singapore and raised in Ethiopia until age 8 by his professor parents, looks forward to additional great life experiences here in Ketchikan. He plans on enjoying the outdoors while kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking with his two dogs - an Australian shepherd and a border collie.

The team at the Family and Internal Medicine Clinic is excited to welcome Dr. Whipple to the community.
