Boating Without the Boys Workshop

April 19, 2012
Thursday

(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan is sponsoring a one-and-a-half-day workshop Friday, May 11 from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This workshop is for young women, ages 14-24, who are interested in learning boating skills and safe boating practices. The workshop, funded through a Carl Perkins grant, provides young women the opportunity to explore maritime career paths by talking with female mariners, driving a skiff, gaining experience with a VHF radio and learning how to design a float plan. Participants will use state-of-the-art computer technology to plot a navigational route and will have hands-on practice using a marine computer simulator.

The goal of the workshop is to encourage excitement about and promote boating and maritime careers to young women, demystify boating and give young women the knowledge and confidence to be successful in these fields where women are under-represented.

The workshop is free to participants. Travel funds are available for students and chaperones on Prince of Wales and Annette Islands. This workshop is one of several outreach efforts by UAS Ketchikan to middle and secondary school students.

The workshop will be held at the University of Alaska Southeast Technical Center at 600 Stedman Street in Ketchikan. Interested participants need to call 228-4523 by May 4, 2012 to reserve a spot.
