St. Joseph Hospital Earns Top Awards

St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, a partner with Ketchikan General Hospital in the PeaceHealth system, is the only hospital in Washington state to earn both the 2009 Patient Safety Award and the 2009 Patient Experience Award from HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent healthcare ratings organization.

St. Joseph is among the top five percent in the nation for patient experience, the only hospital in Washington State to achieve this ranking. St. Joseph Hospital is also ranked in the nation's top five percent for patient safety.

"Our vision is to provide safe, evidence-based compassionate care - every time, every touch," said Nancy J. Steiger, CEO and Chief Mission Officer. "These two national awards show that we are living up to our vision and even more important, that our patients are safe and feel well cared for here."

According to Rick May, MD, senior physician consultant at HealthGrades and co-author of the Patient Safety study, they examined incident rates of 15 safety indicators among Medicare patients at nearly all of the nation's 5,000 non-federal hospitals to identify the nation's best-performing hospitals. Those indicators range from complications of anesthesia to infections and post-operative complications.

"We congratulate the staff at St. Joseph Hospital because they continually demonstrate their extraordinary commitment to the reduction of patient safety events," May said.

"Safe, compassionate and high quality patient care is our top priority," said Faye Lindquist, Regional Vice President of Patient Care Services for PeaceHealth. "We have worked diligently to build a region-wide culture that ensures every patient at St. Joseph Hospital feels safe, secure and valued as person while entrusted to our care."

The Patient Experience honor is the result of a HealthGrades analysis of patient survey data collected as part of the federal government's Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. The survey measures patient satisfaction and included questions regarding communication involving nurses and physicians, staff responsiveness, hospital cleanliness and noise levels, medication information and post-discharge care instructions.

"One of our core values is respect for each individual's dignity and worth," said Steiger. "This drives our team effort to ensure that each patient receives the care and attention he or she deserves."

HealthGrades provides ratings of healthcare providers on quality of service, safety, profiles and cost. Its rankings may be viewed online at www.HealthGrades.com.

St. Joseph Hospital, a not-for-profit full-service hospital sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, is part of the PeaceHealth system with hospitals in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. In addition to the hospital and PeaceHealth Medical Group, PeaceHealth Whatcom Region services include a diagnostic laboratory and a joint venture outpatient imaging service.
