WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT
By Jacquie Meck

Gosh, I guess some people realize that WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT. We own it we pay for it .... out of every paycheck we make, and here in Ketchikan pretty much every service and product we buy and use.

That means the main job of OUR government to to represent US and our desires. Granted it's not an easy job with so many opinions flying around.

The Library - the Fire Hall - the Arts - the Pool .... are all here for US. They are an important part of our infrastructure our environment.

We currently short on industry, and these are the types of things that people look for when they consider setting up business or moving here.

Library: A library is MORE than just books! Today they have computers, software, films, periodicals, music. They are quiet place to sit and peruse informative reference materials you might not necessarily want - or be able to purchase.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has a computer or the financial resource to purchase every book they would like. Not everyone is in school.

STOP ... and look - really look - at the people around you. This is not about YOU - or ME for that matter, it is all about US. The US that live in this community.

I'll bet a lot of those people who left here moved to communities that have nice Libraries - Fire Halls - Arts & Entertainment - Swimming Pools.

I don't want taxes raised but I also don't want to live in a tax-free cave. I really wish we didn't have to spend so much money to what we are due, but then again, I've been waiting a long time for that darned fairy godmother to show up.
