In Regard to Civil Discourse

After reading Ms. Gierard's comments regarding Sitnews, I needed to respond to her insensitive remark in regard to Mr. Kaufman's passing and the integrity of Sitnews.

Mr. & Mrs. Kauffman were married many years, and worked side by side in the publication and operation of Sitnews. I believe they had the same beliefs regarding civility and diginity, and I believe that Mrs. Kaufmann is still, and will continue to practice that standard. I would also tend to believe that together, they came up with the "basic rules", or at least agreed upon them before implementation.

I also applaud Mrs. Kauffman as the editor of Sitnews for publishing Ms. Gierard's letter when it was a direct attack on the paper and the individuals responsible for overseeing that operation.

I cannot see how Mr. Johnson's and Mr. Krueger's letters were personal attacks. I found them both to only inform the readers of Sitnews Opinion Letters what had already been established outside of Sitnews, either in the Daily News or by personal admission of the individuals in question.

Again, I thank Sitnews for allowing community members and fellow citizens for being allowed to publish their opinions, with honesty, civility and integrity.

Maybe we could all learn a lesson in civil discourse from Ms. Kauffman, as she seems to not only know how, but continues to practice civil discourse.

Thank you,

Vicki Harsha
