Governor Lauds House for Passing Spending Limit

Juneau, AK - Governor Frank H. Murkowski congratulated members of the Alaska House of Representatives for "doing the right thing" in passing HJR9, which proposes a constitutional spending limit based on population growth and the consumer price index. The resolution passed by a vote of 27-13 Thursday afternoon.

"I appreciate the hard work put forth by members of the House in getting to this vote," Murkowski said. "It underscores what the people of Alaska have been telling us for years, that is, they want government spending under control. They want a leaner, more efficient and effective state government. The cost containment reforms begun by the Republican majorities over the past 6-8 years are reflected in this vote. This administration has limited the Constitutional Budget Reserve draw and significantly reduced spending from prior years, and this vote supports what we have been doing.

"This spending limit is the first component of a realistic and workable fiscal package. I especially want to thank Speaker Pete Kott and Rep. Bill Stoltze for their hard work, perseverance and leadership in giving the people of Alaska the opportunity to vote on this important issue."
