Open Letter: Keep Ketchikan's Alaskan Spirit
by Kathy Graham

Dear Bernard K. Passman:

I've noticed that you are sprucing up the exterior of your building in preparation for the summer season. The interior has always been lovely with its soft colors and lighting.

You've been a great neighbor in Ketchikan and have been generous in your donations to area non-profits, i.e.: WISH and Holy Name Catholic School, etc. I'm hoping you will be receptive to one more favor...please change the exterior color of your building!

When it first began to be brushed on, we kept our fingers crossed that the mustard yellow color was just a primer. Much to our chagrin the second coat was the same. Gosh, it's just ugly. Looking at the colors of the forest, sky, and ocean nearby, it is jarring.

Please, please, I know it would cost you some money, but it would mean so much to all of us here. Historic Ketchikan has a 2004 Paint Fix Up program and aid you in color choice and may even reimburse you for the cost of paint. They can be contacted at 907-225-5515.

You know how special our downtown is; keep its Alaskan spirit.

Thank you,

Kathy Graham
