Johnson is not new to Alaska, but a recent returnee. After competing her master’s to become a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2006, she served as a Primary and Emergency Care provider in Yakutat.

Johnson began her medical career as a Medical Assistant in 1994, first putting her skills to use as a Labor and Delivery Assistant before transferring to Mercy West Family Practice & Urgent Care. In 2000, she completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, and went to work as a Registered Nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During her time at the Mayo Clinic, she specialized in caring for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. With the knowledge she gained while caring for ICU patients, Johnson participated in an extensive program used to prepare nurses at the Mayo Clinic to better care for critically ill patients.

After serving in the ICU for a number of years Johnson decided to continue her education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner so she could, as she said, “shift my focus to preventative medicine, ultimately helping my patients avoid the complications of various diseases by helping them understand what they could be doing to get well and stay well.”

Johnson competed a Master of Science in Nursing from Winona State University in Rochester and served her residency at the Mayo Clinic. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, Johnson has served from Yakutat to Wisconsin and Michigan; providing care for patients in family practice and urgent and emergency care situations. Making the move to PeaceHealth Medical Group in Ketchikan, Johnson looks forward to really being able to help her patients focus on prevention and wellness.

After an adventurous move across country in the middle of winter, Donna and her husband Eric and three boys are glad to be getting settled in Ketchikan. The move allows them to realized their dream to return to Alaska and they look forward to enjoying all that this part of Alaska has to offer.

The team at the Family and Internal Medicine Clinic say they are excited to welcome Johnson. By adding her to the team, they will be able to serve even more patients with urgent concerns who want and need same-day appointments. With a heart to help people focus on prevention, you can expect to see Johnson around the community as she is invited to participate in a Seaside Chat or a Saturday Wellness Series talk at the library.
