Food Handler's Cards
By Falene Reeve

March 21, 2011

It is my understanding that anyone who helps to produce a food or beverage must obtain a card. This would include bartenders and baristas. I come into contact with many folks working in the industry who are unaware of needing to have one.

I know it doesn't guarantee that standards are being met, but it does introduce some really necessary information about cross contamination, cooling and reheating and personal hygiene that many folks aren't aware of and don't use at home. It is the first step and I feel a necessary one.

FYI - Ketchikan Coffee Company @ the New York Cafe strives to follow the sanitation guidelines and does require its employees to obtain a card.
