Mother Squirrel

We have had a red squirrel living in one of our trees for the
past 3 years in a small house my wife made. Last summer she had
3 pups - that was neat.
She had been missing for 4
days and we went to check her house and she died inside. She
looked fat and no marks on her of any kids with bb guns or cats
getting to her. We fed her appropriately, but I don't know why
she died, such a sad day for us.
