(SitNews) Juneau, Alaska - Almost a month to the day from the start of the 90-day legislative session, the Alaska House Coalition finalized its leadership team, and the House of Representatives voted to adopt a report that establishes the membership of legislative committees. The leadership team was adopted on February 18th.

“We’re ready to get to work and move forward with the people’s business,” Speaker Stutes said.

Stutes said, “Now that the House is organized, we’ll hit the ground running and start advancing policies that protect the health and welfare of Alaskans, confront our budget challenges, and improve public safety.”

The coalition of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents which controls the House will be led by Speaker Louise Stutes (R-Kodiak), who will serve alongside Majority Leader Chris Tuck (D-Anchorage), Rules Chair Bryce Edgmon (I-Dillingham), Majority Whip Matt Claman (D-Anchorage), and Finance Co-Chairs Neal Foster (D-Nome) and Kelly Merrick (R-Eagle River).

The Alaska House of Representatives elected Representative Louise Stutes (R-Kodiak) as the new Speaker of the House on Feb. 11th. Senate Democratic Leader Tom Begich (D-Anchorage) in a prepared statement wrote, “I congratulate Representative Stutes on becoming the next Speaker of the House. She has the strength to lead a diverse group of Alaskans in the bipartisan coalition and do what is best for Alaskans. I look forward to working closely with her to move this state in a direction all Alaskans are proud of.”

“I am tremendously honored to receive the support of my colleagues and ready to get work building new opportunities for Alaskans and confronting the difficult issues our state faces,” Speaker Stutes said. “We welcome members from all political backgrounds to join our coalition.”

“I congratulate my dear friend Louise Stutes on being elected Speaker of the House,” said Rep. Bryce Edgmon (I-Dillingham), who served as speaker for the past four years. “Louise is an incredible leader and will work to advance the interests of the entire State of Alaska.”

Speaker Stutes was first elected to represent House District 32 in 2014. She owned a small business in Kodiak for 25 years before entering public service. Her husband is Stormy Stutes, and together they have four children.
