(SitNews) Juneau, Alaska - Saturday on the steps of Alaska’s State Capitol, Senator Lesil McGuire, R-South Anchorage, rallied with dozens of people to protect Alaskans and their Second Amendment rights to own and bear arms. Senator McGuire spoke as part of the ‘Day of Resistance Rally’ which was organized to celebrate First and Second Amendment rights.

“I’m proud to be a card-carrying lifelong member of the NRA- as is my husband, as is my father, and so will be my son,” Senator McGuire told the crowd. “Our Second Amendment rights are not just important to us in Alaska, they are part of who we are.”

During Saturday’s speech, Senator McGuire emphasized how this most recent attack on Second Amendment Rights is just one more push by the Federal Government to take away the rights of Alaskans.

“Federal overreach has already locked up resource development in the ANWR and NPR-A.” said Senator McGuire. “And now, they have even stooped to a new low by denying the building of the Izembek Road which would allow residents to travel between King Cove and Cold Bay in order to access health care and reduce their costs of living.”

Quoting an Alaska Senate Majority news release, the fight to protect Second Amendment rights became even more critical after President Barack Obama and other members of Congress proposed further limitations on gun ownership after a series of horrific shootings, including one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut which tragically claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators.

“As a mother, I would rather have people in the schools who are armed and trained to provide protection when those senseless tragedies happen,” said Senator McGuire. “We have to fight every day to preserve this sacred right. Without this right, our country has nothing left.”

During her 13 years in the Alaska State Legislature, Senator McGuire has staunchly supported numerous efforts to protect Second Amendment rights including amending the Alaska State Constitution to strengthen and clarify concealed carry laws for personal protection and passing a resolution sending a strong message to the federal government that Alaskans would not stand for an infringement of gun rights.

Senators John Coghill, R-North Pole, Fred Dyson, R-Eagle River, and Pete Kelly, R-Fairbanks also showed their support during the rally.
