Quoting a news release, the accord is a broad ranging agreement that provides for regular exchange of information and cooperation between Alaska and Yukon in tourism, transportation, trade and commerce, resource development, climate change, wildlife management, economic development and infrastructure.

“Alaskans have enjoyed a close friendship and strong economic ties with Yukoners for many years,” said Governor Parnell. “Our discussions today [Tuesday] will advance initiatives to benefit both.”

“Yukon and Alaska have a unique relationship in the world,” Premier Pasloski said. “We have a 1,200 kilometer border with many links and share many common interests. Our work here today will serve Yukoners and Alaskans well.”

In the meeting, the governor and premier also reviewed the progress of the Skagway Port expansion. In 2011, Yukon copper ores worth approximately $200 million were exported through Skagway, Alaska to Pacific Rim markets. During the 2011 legislative session, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority received authority to bond up to $65 million to expand the Skagway Ore Terminal. Access to Alaskan ports such as Skagway, and efficient transportation corridors to Yukon mines could improve feasibility for several new development projects, resulting in jobs and economic development for both Yukon and Alaska.
