Alaska Board of Fisheries to Meet in Anchorage,
February 20 – March 5

(SitNews) Juneau, Alaska - The Alaska Board of Fisheries will meet February 20 through March 5, 2011 at the Egan Center in Anchorage to consider proposed regulatory changes to the Upper Cook Inlet Area fisheries.

Proposals have been submitted by the general public, fishing organizations, local fish and game advisory committees, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The board received over 200 proposals for consideration during this two-week public meeting. The Alaska Board of Fisheries addresses Upper Cook Inlet area subsistence, sport, commercial, and personal use fisheries once every three years.

Topics include fishing season dates, harvest and bag limits, methods and means, closed waters, and management plans for sockeye, coho, king salmon and other species. Areas include salt waters of Cook Inlet and associated freshwater drainages including the Kenai, Kasilof, and Susitna river drainages.

The board will also review three action plans developed by the Department of Fish and Game to increase king salmon returns to the Chuitna, Theodore, and Lewis Rivers and Alexander, Willow, and Goose Creeks.

The board encourages the public to submit written comments on specific proposals. Comments up to 10 pages in length may be submitted by fax (907-465-6094) or delivered to the board during the meeting.

The board also invites oral public testimony during the meeting. Anyone intending to testify must sign up at the meeting site in Anchorage before 9:00 a.m. Monday, February 21. Public testimony will continue until everyone who has signed up by the deadline has been given the opportunity to be heard.

Deliberations on the Upper Cook Inlet area proposals will begin following public testimony and committee review. All portions of the meeting are open to the public.
