Scholarship Applications Being Accepted

Ketchikan, Alaska - Fall 2006 scholarship applications are open for a number of UAS Ketchikan and other local scholarships. Many of the scholarships are open to applicants interested in attending college in Ketchikan. Some applications apply to other campuses around Alaska as well as for students interested in vocational education.

The Beck Writing Award awards $500 to a student demonstrating exceptional skills and interest in writing. Several writing samples are required. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Sharon "Christa" McAuliffe scholarship is a $500 Student Government funded scholarship awarded to a student based on financial need, campus and community involvement and leadership. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Al Robertson Scholarship awards $500 to students enrolled in a vocational degree or certificate, or course-work leading to employment or industry certification in a vocational field. Applicants must apply during their senior year at Ketchikan High School. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Philis Smith Scholarship awards $1,000 to a UAS Ketchikan student who demonstrates motivation, academic leadership potential, has earned at least a 2.0 GPA, and is currently in good academic standing. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Paul Wingren Scholarship awards $1,000 to a UAS Ketchikan student in a program leading toward a vocational degree/certificate or in course-work leading toward employment or industry certification. Applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA and preference given to students currently employed. Financial need, motivation, and evidence of solid work habits are considered. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Ralph Yetka Scholarship awards $750 to a graduate of a Ketchikan High School who plans to attend the University of Alaska majoring in aviation, computer science, education, or engineering. Applicants must have earned at least a 2.5 GPA during high school or college career and should have been involved in extracurricular activities as a student either in school or out. Deadline to apply is April 17.

Ketchikan Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association (CHARR) created the Ketchikan CHARR Scholarship Program to provide educational equity and opportunities for tomorrow's men and women in any field of interest but within the State of Alaska. Eligible applicants must be a current resident of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough; accepted for admission to an accredited university, college, or post-secondary vocational school within the State of Alaska and preference may be given to students who have or are currently working in cabarets, hotels, restaurants, and retailers of the licensed beverage industry or a similar field. Deadline to apply for this scholarship is April 21.

A new scholarship, State Farm Insurance - Dan Christensen Educational Scholarship is open and will award two scholarships of $1,000 each to UAS Ketchikan students who are finishing an Associates degree and continuing on to complete a Bachelors degree in the University of Alaska (UAA, UAF, or UAS) system. Deadline to apply is April 24.

State Farm Insurance also has four scholarships available for high school students who plan to attend the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus. Deadline for this application is May 5.

Several other scholarships are now open for application with deadlines in August. They include the UAS Alumni Association Ketchikan Chapter scholarship; the UAS Ketchikan Advisory Council scholarship; the Frege-Siemon math, science, and technology scholarship; and the Ricardo Sainz Memorial Scholarship.

Applications for all these scholarships are available at the UAS Ketchikan main campus in the Ziegler Building as well as on the UAS Ketchikan website: www.ketch.alaska.edu. The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus provides a wide variety of educational courses and programs to Ketchikan and the surrounding communities throughout the year. Through these offerings, students can achieve certifications, associate, bachelor and master degrees.
