The Rezoning of Residential land in town to Heavy Industrial and Unrestricted Commercial.

Thursday AM

I am concerned again about the attempt to rezone our valley into heavy industrial. This issue keeps reappearing and is making residents weary of the constant disregard of their health and rights on their own property.  Who wants to live in an industrial area?

Address: 1000 Block Third Ave.

In this case, the land is ‘outside’ the City of Ketchikan, but is the property right above the library and near enough to Rainbird Trail to affect tourist, wildlife and residents alike.

According to the Planning Commission notice we have until February 3rd to submit comments to be added into the packet. If you enjoy the peaceful walk or jogging and the lookout on 3rd avenue please take time to comment on this issue. If you like going to the library to relax and are concerned about what it will mean to have this area turn into more of a heavy industrial area, please comment. As for the residents of Bear Valley, we have no assurance that we will be protected once this is converted in Heavy Industrial or what the owners or future owners plan on subjecting us to. Most likely we will have some form of pollution whether in the form of noise pollution, air pollution or more. Please make a comment to stand up for your personal property values, your health and your peace. Also, for those who remember the recycled asphalt plant that was going to be put near there, it was a concern not just about our environment, health and safety, but also about us having to replace the roadway as a result of the heavy industrial activity. This issue touches all those who pay taxes.

PS. I am sorry that this property is not a very good investment unless it is Heavy Industrial. I am willing to sit down with the owners to listen to your ideas and to try brainstorming some other things you could do with this property. There might even be some others in town that would, but it would be nice if every year we didn’t have to worry that someone, with property on the hill, was going to try and lower the living standards of the residents in our town and in the valley.
