(SitNews) Juneau, Alaska—An upgraded online tool – the Alaska Career Lattice — is designed to help employers and job seekers see a broader range of options. The lattice is based on extensive analysis by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, which tracked the occupation-to-occupation movements of Alaska workers over a nine-year period and identified the most common career tracks to and from every occupation.

“In today’s evolving marketplace, it’s becoming more rare to stick to a single profession for an entire working life,” Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Click Bishop said. “A worker may be unexpectedly looking to replace a job he or she loved because of the changes in an industry or a labor market.”

The Alaska Career Lattice, which is featured in the December issue of “Alaska Economic Trends,” can help individuals identify occupations or advancement opportunities they may not have considered. The online tool can also help employers expand an applicant pool for jobs that are tough to fill by identifying related occupations they can draw from.

“A career lattice branches out to occupations that are at about the same level,” said Economist Todd Mosher, who managed the lattice project. “This allows workers who have lost a job to broaden their job search by exploring other choices they could transition to quickly, without a lot of additional education and training.”

The Alaska Career Lattice, which includes three online tutorials, also presents caree roptions to students or to workers who are looking for a career change in a closely related field.
