(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - The City of Ketchikan Port & Harbors Department announced that the launch ramps at Knudson Cove will be closed due to construction effective 8:00 am Monday January 31, 2011.

Ketchikan Ready Mix, the contractor working on the project to replace the launch ramps and launch ramp floats, is hoping to finish the dredging portion of the project this week so that work can resume on the launch ramp itself. Up until now the contractor has attempted to keep at least one side of the ramp available for limited use as much as possible but the project is reaching the point where that will not be possible. The contract calls for the project to be substantially complete no later than April 15.

The approximately $1.1 million project is being funded by a combination of grants from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Denali Commission and a required local contribution from the City’s harbor reserve fund.

The project includes increasing the grade of the launch ramps from 12% to the industry standard of 13%, replacement of the launch ramp floats and creosote piles and construction of a stairway between the upper and lower parking lots.
